Chief Visionary’s Message
Sizing Up the Competition and
Matadors Running With Squirrels
This month’s speaker, Holly Green, taught us how to slow down to get a competitive edge and “win”. We learned that our brains are constantly filtering out information that is not consistent with what we “know” to be true. Readers who missed Holly, will not want to miss our next speaker Christophe Morin, back by overwhelming demand. See the next section to register for this event.
The key to winning market share is to be different enough from your competition so that prospects will find more value in your products, services or solutions. How do you accomplish this? We learned four simple steps to gain a competitive edge from this article in Entrepreneur magazine.
1. Gather data on your competitors from their web site, brochures and social media pages. If you can, make a purchase and experience what it’s like to do business with a competitor.
2. Stretch beyond obvious competitors and find “perceived” competitors. Then gather data about them to prepare you to differentiate your business further.
3. Get feedback from your customers to understand what is important to them instead of guessing. You may be surprised to learn a feature or quality you are using to differentiate yourself is really not important to your customer.
4. Once you know what’s really important to your customers, beyond assumptions, find a way to do something that matters differently. FEDEX did this with it’s widely successful (and hilarious) “When it absolutely positively has to get there overnight” campaign.

Take a moment to watch the short commercial below that demonstrates what happens when you take the competition for granted. Readers who enjoyed “Cowboys Herding Cats” will love “Matadors Running With Squirrels”.
